Wall Street I
A rare turn of the century (c1900) photograph of Wall Street, with Trinity Church at the far end.
Today, Wall St. is famous for all that is banking and finance. However, the namesake owes its origin to fearful early settlers of Lower Manhattan. The street was actually a wall, a barrier to thwart off local Indian invasions upon the newly formed settlement to the south, hence the name "Wall St." in later years.
Wall Street has seen it all, from marauding Indians, British invasion, the Great Depression, and in modern times the dismantling of Michael Milken. No other street in America has written more stories of great success and tragic loss.
